Earth News PhotoLast weekend, I delivered an empowering, diet/environment message, titled “Heal Yourself, Heal Your Planet,” to students at the University of California, Berkeley at their Vegan Earth Day Celebration.

My message for the 44th annual Earth Day celebrations is that our rapacious consumption of animal-based food products is a driving force behind most of the environmental destruction we face today, including deforestation, soil erosion, water depletion, desertification, water pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and more.

The personal and planetary effects of a meat-based diet are now glaringly apparent, despite being denied by those who profit from meat and dairy production (and the fossil-fuels burned to create them), as well as those want to consume meat in large quantities.

The single most effective action you can take to improve your health, the health of our planet, and the lives of all who come after us is to reduce or eliminate the consumption of meat, dairy, and other animal products. I echo Katie Mae’s motto: Eat as if our future depends on it – because it does!
